Jethro Tull

Agricultural Engineering

Jethro Tull was an English agricultural engineer and writer whose mechanical innovations helped transform farming practice in the early eighteenth century. He developed a horse-drawn seed drill around 1701 that sowed seeds in tidy, efficient rows at a controlled depth, replacing the wasteful practice of scattering seed by hand, and he designed a horse-drawn hoe to mechanize weeding between rows. His 1731 treatise 'Horse-Hoeing Husbandry' argued for these methods and for tillage over manuring to improve soil, influencing agricultural techniques that spread across Britain and its colonies during the Agricultural Revolution.
