Benjamin Holt

Benjamin Holt was an American engineer and inventor who developed the first commercially successful continuous-track ('caterpillar') tractor. Frustrated by conventional wheeled harvesting equipment sinking into California's soft delta soil, he built a steam-powered tracked tractor in 1904 that distributed its weight across a continuous belt of linked plates, dramatically improving traction and flotation on soft or uneven ground. His Holt Manufacturing Company's caterpillar tractors were rapidly adopted for agriculture and earthmoving, and the underlying track-laying principle was later adapted for military tanks during the First World War.
