Field

Field gathers the technology atlas own entries on the named branches and disciplines of engineering, from long established branches such as civil, mechanical and electrical engineering to newer ones such as robotics, nanotechnology and systems engineering. Each entry here answers what a branch of engineering studies and builds, what problems define it, and how it took shape as its own recognized discipline, distinct from a specific invention, material, method, engineered system or the individual engineers who worked within it, which are the atlas own separate Inventions, Materials, Methods, Engineered Systems and Engineers categories. A field entry is the umbrella a reader starts from before following it down to the concrete inventions, materials and people that field produced.
