Aerospace engineers and applied mathematicians who worked on the structures, aerodynamics and aeroelasticity of aircraft and who trained later engineers at universities. Their research papers and university teaching supported the analysis and design of aircraft structures. The group covers the academic side of flight, where calculation, wind tunnel testing and the teaching of students mattered as much as flying. Aircraft constructors and the rocket and spaceflight engineers are grouped separately.
