Raymond Damadian was an American physician and inventor who built the first nuclear magnetic resonance scanning machine. His research showed that tumors and normal tissue could be told apart by their differing relaxation times under NMR, and in 1977 he performed the first full-body scan of a human being using the technique, work that became the basis of magnetic resonance imaging. He received the National Medal of Technology in 1988 and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1989. FAQs
Did Raymond Damadian's 1974 patent describe how to make MRI pictures?
The patent covered scanning the body with NMR to locate cancer but not producing images.
No. His 1974 patent was the first in the field of MRI, covering the concept of using NMR to detect cancer, and it included the idea of using NMR to scan the human body to locate cancerous tissue. However, it did not describe a method for generating pictures from such a scan or precisely how such a scan might be done. Paul Lauterbur later expanded on Herman Carr's one-dimensional technique to develop a way to generate the first MRI images. Damadian's recognition that NMR relaxation time can distinguish different tissue types and malignant tissue is what gives MRI its contrast between tissue types.
