John Wellington Starr

Electrical Engineering

John Wellington Starr was an American inventor who worked on early incandescent lighting. In 1844 he filed a United States patent caveat with John Milton Sanders for an incandescent lamp and generator, and in 1845 he secured a British patent describing two lamp designs, one using a platinum filament sealed in glass and another using a carbon strip held in a vacuum above a column of mercury so the filament could be replaced. Starr demonstrated his lamps in England but contracted tuberculosis and died in 1846 before he could develop the designs further.
