Paul (Louis-Toussaint) Heroult (1863 to 1914) was a French scientist and engineer who was one of the inventors of the Hall-Heroult process for smelting aluminium, and who developed the first successful commercial electric arc furnace. The Hall-Heroult process is named jointly for him and for his contemporary Charles Martin Hall, who arrived at the method independently. His work bears on both materials engineering and electrical engineering, since the smelting method and the arc furnace both rely on electric current to reduce or melt metals at industrial scale. He lived in Thury-Harcourt, Normandy. The source lead supports these facts and no more about his life.
