Captain George William Manby (28 November 1765 to 18 November 1854) was an English author and inventor, born in Denver on the edge of the Norfolk Fens. After the wreck of HMS Snipe off Great Yarmouth in 1807 he experimented with mortars and invented the Manby Mortar, which fired a thin rope from shore into the rigging of a ship in distress, and his apparatus was officially adopted in 1814. In 1813 he invented the Extincteur, a copper vessel of pearl ash solution held under compressed air that was the first portable pressurised fire extinguisher. He designed an apparatus for saving life from shipwrecks and the Pelican Gun, and he was one of the first five people to receive the gold medal of the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck in 1825.
