Hans Lorenz was a German engineer and mathematical physicist, born in Wilsdruff in the Kingdom of Saxony in 1865 and died in 1940. He studied at Leipzig University and the Royal Saxon Polytechnic in Dresden under Gustav Zeuner, graduating in 1889, then worked for a firm in Augsburg and for Escher-Wyss of Zurich on refrigeration. He took a doctorate at Munich for work on the thermodynamic limits of cooling and founded a journal for the refrigeration industry. He was professor of applied physics at Halle from 1896, moved to the Technische Hochschule Danzig in 1904 and retired in 1934. His work spanned refrigeration, the strength of materials, vibrations, fluid dynamics, ballistics and astrophysics, and he helped build engineering training on sound mathematical and physical foundations.
