Jeff Sutherland

Software Engineering

Jeff Sutherland (born 1941) is one of the creators of Scrum, a framework for product management and software development. With Ken Schwaber he presented Scrum at OOPSLA in 1995, contributed to the Agile Manifesto in 2001, and co-wrote and maintains the Scrum Guide, the official definition of the framework. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1964, flew reconnaissance missions in an RF-4C Phantom in the Vietnam War, earned a master's degree in statistics at Stanford, taught mathematics at the Air Force Academy and earned a doctorate in biometrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Scrum was developed by Sutherland, John Scumniotales and Jeff McKenna at Easel Corporation, drawing on a 1986 Harvard Business Review article by Takeuchi and Nonaka, with thirty-day sprints. With Yosi Amram he also developed NewsPage at Individual.com, an early internet news publisher. He founded Scrum Inc. in Boston.
