Galileo (satellite navigation system)

Aerospace Engineering

Galileo is a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) created by the European Union through the European Space Agency (ESA) and operated by the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA). Its ground infrastructure is distributed across three EU states rather than centralized in one country: headquartered in Prague, Czechia, with two ground operations centres in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, and in Fucino, Italy. The project began offering limited services in 2016, and is named after the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei. FAQs

Why did Europe build Galileo when GPS already exists?

Europe wanted a positioning system it controls instead of depending on GPS or GLONASS.

One aim of Galileo is to give Europe an independent high-precision positioning system, so that European political and military authorities do not have to rely on the United States GPS or the Russian GLONASS systems, which their operators could disable or degrade at any time. The basic, lower-precision Galileo services are free and open to everyone.
