Eastern Africa Power Pool

Electrical Engineering

The Eastern Africa Power Pool is a collaborative effort by eleven countries in eastern Africa to interconnect their national electricity grids, so that member states can draw on each other's excess generating capacity and trade electric power across the region. It was established in February 2005 by seven founding countries, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda and Sudan, and was later joined by Tanzania in 2010, Libya in 2011, and Djibouti and Uganda in 2012. Its secretariat is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and its stated objectives include reducing power costs across the region, facilitating power trade among members, increasing the availability of electricity to citizens of member countries, and improving the security of each member's grid.
