Harshad Bhadeshia

Materials Engineering

Sir Harshad Bhadeshia is an Indian-British metallurgist, born in 1953 in Kenya, who researches solid-state phase transformations in steels. He moved to Britain in 1970, worked as a quality control technician while studying part-time, and earned a degree at the City of London Polytechnic before completing a doctorate at the University of Cambridge in 1980 on retained austenite and bainitic and martensitic transformations. He joined Cambridge's Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy in 1981 and in 2008 became the first Tata Steel Professor of Metallurgy. In the 1990s he worked with British Steel on a carbide-free, silicon-rich bainitic steel used for Channel Tunnel rails and later for a high-performance armour steel. He led the Computational Metallurgy Laboratory at the Graduate Institute for Ferrous Technology in Korea, received the Bessemer Gold Medal in 2006, and publishes freely accessible teaching materials, including over fourteen hundred videos.
