Henry Booth was a Liverpool-born businessman and engineer who helped found the Liverpool and Manchester Railway Company in 1825 and served as its secretary and treasurer. The son of a corn merchant, he wrote the company's lengthy and detailed prospectus of 29 October 1829, its first major public announcement. He is also credited with designing the first multi-tubular boiler, as used on Stephenson's locomotive Rocket. He was married in 1812 and had three daughters and a son. Booth died at his Liverpool residence in 1869 and was buried at Toxteth Chapel. His career joined the administrative running of an early main-line railway with a practical contribution to locomotive boiler design.
