Jacob Ziv (1931 to 2023) was an Israeli electrical engineer and information theorist, born in Tiberias, who became one of the founders of modern data compression. He studied electrical engineering at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology and took his doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1962. He worked on communication systems at the Israel Ministry of Defense, spent 1968 to 1970 at AT&T Bell Laboratories, and joined the Technion in 1970, where he became a professor and later dean of electrical engineering.
