Alexander Graham Bell

Electrical Engineering

Alexander Graham Bell was a Scottish-born inventor and teacher of the deaf who was awarded the master United States patent for the telephone on March 7, 1876. He went on to found the Bell Telephone Company the same year and later worked on early flight, hydrofoils and hearing technology, but the telephone patent, and the priority dispute it triggered with Elisha Gray, remains the work he is remembered for.

FAQs

Did Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray really file for the telephone on the same day?

Yes, both filed on February 14, 1876, and which came first is still debated.

Yes. On February 14, 1876, Elisha Gray filed a caveat with the U.S. Patent Office for a telephone design that used a water transmitter, and that same morning Bell's lawyer filed Bell's application. Historians still debate which filing arrived first, and Gray later challenged the primacy of Bell's patent. The patent itself was issued to Bell on March 7, 1876, which is why he is credited with the telephone while the priority dispute remains part of the story.
