Walter Hunt

Mechanical Engineering

Walter Hunt of New York City was an inventor who patented a dress-pin in 1849. His patent describes a pin made from a single piece of wire or metal that combines a spring and a clasp, so that the point of the pin is pressed into a catch and held there by the pin's own spring. He said it could be made of ordinary pin wire or of precious metals, and the drawings show one version with a coiled spring and another with an elliptical coiled spring.
