Mining and Geological Engineering groups the two disciplines most directly concerned with locating, assessing and extracting mineral, metal and energy resources from the earth. Mining engineering designs and operates the methods and infrastructure used to locate, extract and process mineral and metal ore deposits safely and economically, spanning surface, open pit and underground mining methods along with the ventilation, structural support, ore processing and environmental reclamation those operations require. Geological engineering applies the science of geology together with engineering principles to determine whether ground conditions can support a planned project, assessing sites for mining operations as well as civil, environmental and oil and gas projects through geological, geoenvironmental, geophysical and geotechnical study. The two fields are commonly paired in practice and in university department names, geological engineers directly supporting the site assessment and resource evaluation work mining engineering itself depends on.
