Early and Experimental Pioneer Aircraft

An experimental aircraft is an aircraft intended for testing new aerospace technologies and design concepts, built and flown to demonstrate or evaluate an idea before it becomes an established, production design. This class gathers early and experimental aircraft in the atlas whose historical significance rests on demonstrating an unproven design concept rather than on entering routine production or service: an aircraft built to test a genuinely new configuration, propulsion method or control mechanism, often by a single inventor or a small experimental program, at a point when the underlying idea itself was still unproven. Such aircraft are grouped separately from production aircraft types and from individual named component inventions, since what makes them significant is the concept under test, not an operational service record.
