Hans von Ohain was a German engineer who developed a turbojet engine independently of, and initially unaware of, Frank Whittle's parallel British work. His engine powered the Heinkel He 178 to the world's first jet powered flight on August 27, 1939. He emigrated to the United States after the Second World War and continued jet propulsion research for the US Air Force.
