ASCII, short for American Standard Code for Information Interchange, is a character encoding standard that represents a set of 95 printable characters and 33 control characters, 128 code points in total, aimed mainly at English-language text. The set of punctuation ASCII made available had a significant effect on the syntax of later computer languages and text markup formats. ASCII also strongly shaped the character sets used by later computers, and the first 128 code points of Unicode are identical to ASCII.
