A hard disk drive is an electro-mechanical data storage device that stores and retrieves digital data using magnetic storage, with one or more rigid rapidly rotating platters coated in magnetic material. IBM developed the first disk drive, led by a team under Reynold Johnson, completing the design on December 24, 1954, and shipping the first production model, the IBM 350, in 1957. The IBM 350 became the dominant secondary storage device for general-purpose computers from the early 1960s onward, and hard disk drives have remained a mainstay of servers and personal computers ever since, though solid-state drives now compete with them for most consumer uses.
