Subwoofer

Electrical Engineering

A subwoofer is a loudspeaker built to reproduce low pitched audio frequencies, known as bass and sub bass, that lie below what a standard woofer can optimally generate. Consumer subwoofers typically cover roughly 20 to 200 hertz, professional live sound systems go below 100 hertz, and THX certified systems go below 80 hertz, so a subwoofer handles the lowest two or three octaves of the ten octaves people can hear. The first home audio subwoofers appeared in the 1960s to improve the bass response of stereo systems, and the device became widely known in the 1970s through Sensurround, a technology used in films such as Earthquake that used large subwoofers to produce powerful low frequency effects in theaters.
