Auguste Piccard was a Swiss physicist, inventor and explorer who lived from 1884 to 1962. He became known for record-breaking hydrogen balloon flights, with which he studied the upper atmosphere of the Earth and became the first person to enter the stratosphere. He also invented the first bathyscaphe, the deep-diving vessel FNRS-2, in which he made a number of unmanned dives in 1948 to explore the depths of the ocean. His twin brother Jean Felix Piccard is also a notable figure in the annals of science and exploration, as are a number of their relatives.
