A puddling furnace is a coal-fired reverberatory furnace used to convert brittle pig iron from a blast furnace into malleable wrought iron, keeping hot air over the iron without letting the fuel touch it directly while a worker stirs the metal through work doors with long hooked bars called rabbles. The ironmaster Peter Onions built the first successful commercial puddling furnace at Dowlais in 1783 and patented it, and the ironmaster Henry Cort improved the design at Fontley, Hampshire in 1783 and 1784, patenting an added chimney damper that prevented the iron from overheating. Puddling let Britain and, soon after, North America expand iron production dramatically without depending on charcoal, and the process remained a mainstay of iron manufacturing through much of the nineteenth century.
Facts
YearPeter Onions built a working puddling furnace at Dowlais in 1783 and patented it (No. 1370), but Henry Cort's improved furnace, patented in 1784, is the version generally credited with commercial success. SignificancePuddling was one of the most important processes for producing the first appreciable volumes of usable bar iron without charcoal, enabling a major expansion of iron production in Britain and North America that helped drive the Industrial Revolution's iron industry. 1 FAQs
Why was the puddling furnace so important to ironmaking?
It let ironmakers produce large volumes of malleable wrought iron without charcoal.
Puddling was one of the most important processes for making the first appreciable volumes of valuable and useful bar iron, which is malleable wrought iron, without the use of charcoal. That freedom from charcoal is why the process mattered to iron production.

Cort developed his ideas at the Fontley Works (as he had renamed Titchfield Hammer) resulting in a 1783 patent for a simple reverberatory furnace to refine pig iron followed by a 1784 patent for his puddling furnace, with grooved rollers which mechanised the formerly laborious process.
