Internal Combustion Engine

An internal combustion engine is a heat engine in which fuel burns together with an oxidizer inside a combustion chamber that forms part of the engine's own working fluid circuit. The expansion of the high temperature, high pressure gases produced by that combustion pushes directly against engine components such as pistons, turbine blades, a rotor or a nozzle, moving them over a distance. This process converts the chemical energy stored in the fuel into kinetic energy, which is used to propel, move or power whatever the engine drives.
