Fishing Reel

A fishing reel is a hand cranked device, mounted near the handle of a fishing rod, used to wind and stow the line, with modern recreational reels adding fittings that control casting distance and the speed and tension of line retrieval. The earliest fishing reels were used in China by at least the Song dynasty, illustrated in Chinese paintings from around 1195 AD after centuries of textual references to line wheels, and reels of this kind spread to England by about 1650, where multiplying, gear retrieved reels were being sold in London tackle shops by the 1760s. The first popular American fishing reel appeared around 1820, and Japanese and Scandinavian precision manufacturers such as Shimano, Daiwa and ABU Garcia later came to dominate the world market.
