Gas metal arc welding, sometimes called by its subtypes metal inert gas or metal active gas welding, is a welding process in which an electric arc forms between a consumable wire electrode and the workpiece metal, heating the workpiece so that it fuses. A shielding gas feeds through the welding gun alongside the wire electrode, shielding the weld from contamination by the surrounding atmosphere.
