Joseph Engelberger

Joseph Engelberger was an American engineer and entrepreneur known as the father of robotics for commercializing the industrial robot. After meeting inventor George Devol, he co-founded Unimation in 1956 to manufacture the Unimate robotic arm and led its development into a commercially viable production tool, installing the first Unimate on a General Motors assembly line in 1961 and building Unimation into the world's first successful robotics company. He later worked to extend robotics into service applications such as hospital delivery robots, and the annual Engelberger Robotics Award, given by the Robotic Industries Association, is named in his honor.
