Movable Type Printing

Also Known As Movable Type
Mechanical Engineering

Movable type printing reproduces text by arranging individually cast or fired characters rather than carving a whole page as one block. The Chinese artisan Bi Sheng invented the earliest known movable type, fired ceramic characters, between 1039 and 1048 during the Song dynasty, roughly four centuries before Johannes Gutenberg's independently developed movable metal type and mechanical press in Europe. Bi Sheng's ceramic type had practical drawbacks, poor adhesion with water based ink and warping during firing, that limited how far it displaced woodblock printing in China. Significance
Movable type printing established the principle, arranging reusable individual characters rather than carving a whole page, that later movable metal type systems in Korea and, independently, Johannes Gutenberg's press in Europe would build on, but the ceramic type's poor ink adhesion and tendency to warp during firing kept it from displacing woodblock printing within China itself. 1

Sources place the invention within a 1039-1048 window rather than a single attested year; 1041 is the commonly cited midpoint.

Held Differently

Johannes Gutenberg, Engineers

Why this is disputed. Independently developed movable metal type and a mechanical press in Europe roughly four centuries after Bi Sheng's earlier ceramic movable type in Song-dynasty China.

The Printing Press, Inventions

Why this is disputed. Bi Sheng's ceramic movable type and Gutenberg's metal-type press are mechanically distinct inventions developed roughly four centuries apart; historians debate whether knowledge of Asian movable type reached Gutenberg or whether his press was an independent invention that arrived at the same underlying principle. This edge records the historical and conceptual lineage, not a claim of direct technical descent.

  • Lead section
Movable type was invented in the Northern Song dynasty around the year 1041 by the commoner Bi Sheng.
  • Body section on limitations
The ceramic type did not hold the water based Chinese calligraphic ink well, and had the additional disadvantage of the size of the type sometimes changing during the baking process, resulting in uneven matching of the type.

Did Knowledge of Chinese and Korean Movable Type Reach Johannes Gutenberg Before His Independent Invention?

Bi Sheng invented ceramic movable type in Song China between 1039 and 1048, and movable metal type was in use in Korea by the fourteenth century, both centuries before Johannes Gutenberg's metal type and mechanical press appeared in Mainz around 1440. No direct documentary link places knowledge of the Asian systems in Gutenberg's hands, and historians remain divided between an independent-invention account and a diffusion account carried along Mongol-era Eurasian trade and diplomatic contacts.

What would resolve this A documented account, correspondence, or artifact placing knowledge of Chinese or Korean movable type printing in Europe, or specifically before Gutenberg, before his circa 1440 press; none has surfaced in the sources consulted for this entry.
