Pile Driver

Mechanical Engineering

A pile driver is a heavy tool used to drive piles of wood, steel or concrete into soil to build the deep foundations of piers, bridges and other structures, typically by raising a heavy weight between vertical guides above the pile and then releasing it to strike the pile downward. Multiple inventors are credited with early versions: Francesco di Giorgio Martini produced an early mechanically sound design in 1475, the engineer John Rennie built a steam-powered pile driver in 1801, and James Nasmyth patented a further steam-powered design in 1845, while the American Otis Tufts is credited with inventing the steam pile driver in the United States. The device remains fundamental to foundation engineering, with the raise-and-drop principle of its earliest designs still underlying hydraulic and diesel pile drivers used today.

Facts
Significance
Pile driving mechanized work that had been done for centuries by human or animal muscle. Steam, and later diesel, hydraulic and electric power let crews raise and drop a far heavier weight with less labor, making deep foundations practical for piers, bridges and heavy structures that muscle powered driving could not reach. 1

Multiple inventors are credited for the steam-powered pile driver: John Rennie in 1801, James Nasmyth in 1845, and Otis Tufts in the United States, as the entity's own description already records.

  • History section
In 1801 John Rennie came up with a steam pile driver in Britain.
  • Types section
Ancient pile driving equipment used human or animal labor to lift weights, usually by means of pulleys, then dropping the weight onto the upper end of the pile. Modern piledriving equipment variously uses hydraulics, steam, diesel, or electric power to raise the weight and guide the pile.
