The Mond process, sometimes called the carbonyl process, is a technique the chemist Ludwig Mond created in 1890 to extract and purify nickel by converting nickel oxide into pure nickel metal in a single-step procedure named for the nickel carbonyl compound it forms as an intermediate. The International Nickel Company commercially operated the process by the late nineteenth century at its works in the Sudbury Basin in Ontario, Canada.

How does the Mond process turn impure nickel into pure nickel?
Carbon monoxide carries nickel away from its impurities as a gas, then heat breaks the gas back down into pure nickel.
It works in three steps that rely on the way carbon monoxide combines with nickel readily and reversibly. First the nickel oxide feed is reduced with hydrogen at about 200 degrees Celsius, which also reduces impurities such as iron and cobalt. Second, the impure nickel reacts with carbon monoxide at 50 to 60 degrees Celsius to form the gas nickel carbonyl, leaving the impurities behind as solids. Third, the nickel carbonyl and carbon monoxide mixture is heated to 220 to 250 degrees Celsius, where the carbonyl breaks back down into pure nickel and carbon monoxide. The last two steps are a chemical transport reaction, and the nickel can be made as a powder or deposited as a coating on an existing substrate such as nickel pellets.
