Software Engineering

JPEG is a widely used method of lossy compression for digital images, especially photographs produced by digital cameras. It lets users trade off file size against visual quality, typically achieving about a 10 to 1 reduction in size with a loss of quality that is perceptible but broadly considered acceptable. The format was developed during the late 1980s by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, a standards committee combining representatives of the International Organization for Standardization and the body now known as the ITU-T, and it was released in 1992. JPEG became the dominant image compression standard worldwide and was largely responsible for the spread of digital photographs across the internet and, later, social media; by 2015 billions of JPEG images were being created every day.

FAQs

Is JPEG a file format or a compression standard?

Strictly a compression standard; Part 5 of the standard defines the JFIF file layout.

Strictly, JPEG is a compression standard. The committee that maintains it describes the JPEG 1 standard, ISO/IEC 10918, as created in 1992 as the result of a process that started in 1986. Part 1 of that standard specifies the core coding technology for encoding photographic images. The way a compressed image is laid out for exchange is covered separately, in Part 5 of the standard, which specifies the JPEG File Interchange Format, known as JFIF.

  • Lead section, first paragraph
Since its introduction in 1992, JPEG has been the most widely used image compression standard in the world, and the most widely used digital image format, with several billion JPEG images produced every day as of 2015.
  • Lead section, second paragraph
The Joint Photographic Experts Group created the standard in 1992, based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT) algorithm. JPEG was largely responsible for the proliferation of digital images and digital photos across the Internet and later social media.
