Cloud Computing

Software Engineering

Cloud computing is a model of delivering computing resources, such as processing power, storage and software, over the internet on demand, from data centers a customer does not own or manage, rather than from equipment installed locally. Its underlying idea traces back to the time-sharing systems of the 1960s, when computer scientists such as John McCarthy envisioned computing power being sold to the public the way electricity or water is, but the term and the modern commercial model took shape only once internet bandwidth and virtualization matured; Amazon Web Services' launch of its Elastic Compute Cloud service in 2006 is widely credited with establishing the pay-as-you-go public cloud as a mainstream commercial offering. Google and Microsoft followed with their own large-scale cloud platforms soon after, and cloud computing has since become the standard way most organizations run web applications, store data and access computing capacity without buying and maintaining their own servers.

Facts
Partially Attested
Patent or First-Use Date
2006-08-24 2
Date of the Amazon EC2 beta announcement, used as the first public commercial use; the concept itself is older.
Year
2006 1
2006 is the release of Amazon S3 and EC2; the same source dates the concept to 1960s time-sharing and the expression to 1996, so the origin year is not settled.
Significance
Shortens time to market through pre-configured tools, scalable resources and managed services. 1
FAQs

What are the main types of cloud computing service?

Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service and Software as a Service.

Cloud services are usually grouped into three types: Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service, and Software as a Service. Infrastructure as a Service supplies basic building blocks such as networking, computers and data storage. Platform as a Service removes the need to manage the underlying hardware and operating systems so users can focus on deploying and managing their applications. Software as a Service is a complete product run and managed by the provider, such as web-based email.
