Weaving machinery encompasses the looms and associated mechanisms that interlace two sets of yarn, the lengthwise warp and the crosswise weft, to produce woven cloth. A loom holds the warp threads under tension while a shuttle, rapier, projectile or jet of air or water carries the weft thread across them, and a harness and shedding mechanism raises and lowers selected warp threads to form the interlacing pattern. Hand looms such as the drawloom gave way from the late eighteenth century onward to power-driven looms, and mechanisms such as the flying shuttle and the Jacquard attachment, which used punched cards to control complex patterns automatically, transformed both the speed and the design possibilities of woven fabric. Later innovations including the dobby loom, the rapier loom and shuttleless air-jet and water-jet looms further increased weaving speed and reduced labor, and weaving machinery remains a foundational technology of the global textile industry.
