Ferrous Metallurgy Processing Furnaces

Ferrous metallurgy processing furnaces are industrial furnace designs used to convert iron ore, pig iron, or scrap into refined iron and steel through controlled heating and chemical reaction. The class spans over two centuries of ferrous metallurgy: the puddling furnace, developed in 1780s England, stirred molten pig iron in a coal-fired reverberatory furnace to burn out carbon and produce wrought iron; the open-hearth furnace burned excess carbon and impurities from pig iron on a shallow hearth using regenerative preheating to produce steel; the electric arc furnace melts scrap and refined iron by striking a high-current arc between electrodes and the charge; the induction furnace heats metal by electromagnetic induction without direct electrode contact; and the cupola furnace is a shaft furnace used in foundries to melt cast iron, Ni-resist iron, and some bronzes by feeding coke, metal, and flux from the top. Each design solved a distinct engineering problem in scaling iron and steel production from craft-scale ironworking toward the mass-produced ferrous metal that underpinned industrial-era construction, machinery, and infrastructure.
