Machines that look inside the living body without cutting it open, including X-ray machines, computed tomography scanners, magnetic resonance imaging, medical ultrasound and positron emission tomography. An invention belongs here when its cited article describes it as a medical imaging technique or device. It excludes monitoring instruments that record a signal such as a heartbeat, which sit with the patient monitoring group, and the implants and prostheses that stay inside the body. Each of these systems turns radiation, sound or magnetism into a picture a clinician can read, and most grew out of physics laboratory work before hospitals adopted them.
