Piston Aircraft Engines

Reciprocating internal combustion engines designed to drive aircraft propellers, in the in-line, rotary, radial and opposed cylinder layouts that powered aeroplanes from the first powered flights through the Second World War and that still power many light aircraft. An invention belongs here when the cited article describes it as a piston engine for aircraft use or a design feature specific to one, such as cooling or supercharging. Turbine and jet engines belong in the gas turbine group, and rocket motors in the rocket propulsion group, of the same field.
