Wool Combing Machine

Textile Engineering

A wool combing machine mechanically combs raw wool fiber, drawing the longer fibers straight and parallel to one another while removing the shorter fibers and any remaining vegetable matter, producing the smooth, aligned sliver that worsted spinning requires, as distinct from the shorter, more tangled fiber that carding alone produces for woolen yarn. The French engineer Josue Heilmann patented his wool combing machine in 1845, mechanizing a process that had previously been done entirely by hand with heated hand combs, a slow and physically demanding trade; his machine used a rotating circular comb to catch and hold the wool fibers while a second combing action drew the long fibers free. Heilmann's design was followed by a series of rival combing machines, including those of Isaac Holden and Samuel Cunliffe Lister in England, which competed on how short a fiber staple they could comb cleanly, and mechanized combing became one of the defining technologies that separated the worsted branch of the wool trade from the woolen branch.

Wikipedia says the machine was originally patented in April 1790; the Dictionary of National Biography entry on Cartwright says his first wool-combing patent was taken out in 1789. The existing entity description credits Heilmann in 1845, which this source does not support for the original invention.
Significance
First example of mechanizing the wool combing stage of textile manufacture, a significant achievement for the textile industry. 1
FAQs

Why did the wool trade value mechanical combing so highly?

Combing straightens wool for worsted yarn, and Grace's Guide calls the work hot, dirty and tiring before Lister's nip comb.

Combing separates and straightens raw wool, and that has to be done before the wool can be spun into worsted yarn. Grace's Guide describes the task in the nineteenth century as a hot, dirty and tiring job. Samuel Cunliffe Lister's nip comb mechanized the task, and the same source says that by inventing it Lister revolutionised the industry.
