Edwin Herbert Land

Materials Engineering

Edwin Herbert Land (1909 to 1991) was an American physicist, manufacturing executive and inventor, born in Connecticut and educated at Norwich Free Academy and Harvard University. He developed the first modern polarizers for light, theories and practical uses of polarized light, improvements in infrared night-vision instruments, and polarized sunglasses and lenses, and he is best remembered for instant one-step photography, made famous by the Polaroid Corporation, the company he founded in 1937. During World War II the company produced filters for goggles, gunsights, periscopes, range finders and aerial cameras, as well as the Norden bombsight. The Polaroid Land Camera was introduced in 1948 and was an immediate commercial success, with many uses found for it in aerial, real estate, commercial and press photography.
