Fujio Masuoka is a Japanese engineer, born in 1943, who worked for Toshiba and Tohoku University and is best known as the inventor of flash memory, including both the NOR and NAND flash types developed in the 1980s. He earned an engineering degree at Tohoku University in 1966 and a doctorate in 1971, and joined Toshiba in 1971, where he invented stacked-gate avalanche-injection MOS memory, a precursor to EEPROM. He filed the flash memory patent in 1980 with Hisakazu Iizuka, and a colleague suggested the word flash because erasure reminded him of a camera flash. In 1988 his team demonstrated the first gate-all-around MOSFET transistor.
