Godfrey N. Hounsfield was a researcher at the Central Research Laboratories of EMI in London who received half of the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the development of computer assisted tomography. He was born on 28 August 1919 in Newark, United Kingdom. During the 1960s he developed an apparatus in which clusters of X-ray beams sent through the body from different angles are registered after they have passed through it. Advanced computer calculations based on the measurement data then create images of different cross sections of the body, and these also provide a basis for three-dimensional images. He died on 12 August 2004 in Kingston upon Thames, United Kingdom.
