A virtual reality headset is a head-mounted display that presents a wearer with stereoscopic images and tracks head movement, creating the sensation of being inside a computer-generated three-dimensional environment. Computer scientist Ivan Sutherland built the first head-mounted display system in 1968 at Harvard and the University of Utah, nicknamed the Sword of Damocles because a mechanical arm suspended the heavy unit from the ceiling. Consumer headsets remained a niche research and arcade curiosity for decades afterward until devices such as the Oculus Rift, funded through a 2012 crowdfunding campaign, revived the technology for mainstream gaming and other consumer uses.
Facts
SignificanceSutherland's head-mounted display, nicknamed the Sword of Damocles, is regarded as the first augmented reality or virtual reality display system made. 1 FAQs
Who helped Ivan Sutherland build the first head-mounted display?
His Harvard student Robert Sproull worked with him on the first display system.
The National Inventors Hall of Fame says that in 1967 Ivan Sutherland, then an associate professor of electrical engineering at Harvard University, devised the first virtual reality head-mounted display system with his student Robert Sproull. This entry dates the finished display to 1968, so the Hall of Fame's year marks when the system was devised rather than when it was completed.
