Jethro Tull was an English agricultural engineer and writer whose mechanical innovations helped transform farming practice in the early eighteenth century. He developed a horse-drawn seed drill around 1701 that sowed seeds in tidy, efficient rows at a controlled depth, replacing the wasteful practice of scattering seed by hand, and he designed a horse-drawn hoe to mechanize weeding between rows. His 1731 treatise 'Horse-Hoeing Husbandry' argued for these methods and for tillage over manuring to improve soil, influencing agricultural techniques that spread across Britain and its colonies during the Agricultural Revolution. FAQs
Did Jethro Tull invent the seed drill?
Sources describe him as refining the seed drill in 1701, not inventing it from nothing.
Grace's Guide says that in 1701 Tull refined the seed drill, a device for sowing seeds effectively, while he was living at Crowmarsh Gifford. That wording describes an improvement on an existing device rather than an invention from nothing.
