Lewis Paul

Textile Engineering

Lewis Paul (died 1759) was an inventor of Huguenot descent, remembered as the original inventor of roller spinning, the principle behind the later water frame for spinning cotton. His father was physician to Lord Shaftesbury. Paul may have begun designing a spinning machine as early as 1729, and after meeting the carpenter John Wyatt in Birmingham some time after 1732 he obtained a patent for roller spinning on 24 June 1738, with Wyatt building the machine or model for him. In 1742 he acquired Marvells Mill on the River Nene at Northampton and rebuilt it to hold water-powered spinning machines, which made it the first cotton mill. In 1748 he also obtained a patent for a carding machine.
