Stephen Earl Wilhite was an American computer scientist who worked at CompuServe and was the engineering lead on the team that created the GIF image file format in 1987. Born in West Chester Township, Ohio, in 1948, he saw the format become the de facto standard for 8-bit color images on the Internet until PNG became widely supported in 1996. The format later became the subject of a patent assertion by Unisys over its use of LZW compression. He remained with CompuServe and AOL into the 2000s, working on wire protocols and Web chat software, received a Webby Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013, and died in 2022.
