Mechanical Engineering

Materials whose primary historical significance is mechanical and structural engineering outside construction: metals and hard materials engineered chiefly for strength, wear resistance or mechanical performance in machines and tools. Belongs here: steel as the archetypal structural and machine metal, and tungsten carbide as a hard, wear-resistant tooling material. Does not belong here: construction-specific materials, grouped under Civil Engineering, or materials engineered chiefly for aerospace, electrical or general materials-science reasons, grouped under their own respective subcategories.
