Model-driven engineering

Software Engineering

Model-driven engineering is a software development methodology centered on creating and using domain models, which are conceptual representations of the knowledge and activities governing a particular application domain, rather than centering on algorithmic or computing concepts. It aims to raise productivity by maximizing compatibility between systems through reuse of standardized models, simplifying design by capturing recurring design patterns within a domain, and improving communication among product managers, designers, developers and users by standardizing terminology and practice. In model-driven development, technical artifacts such as source code, documentation and tests are generated algorithmically from a domain model, so the model must remain meaningful to people familiar with the domain and is built up through extensive collaboration among stakeholders. The approach functions as a subfield of round trip engineering and has a broader scope than model-driven architecture alone.
