Scrum is a software engineering method for managing iterative software development, in which work is organized into short, fixed-length cycles called sprints, typically one to four weeks long, at the end of which a team delivers a working increment of the product and reviews its progress before planning the next sprint. A small, cross-functional team holds brief daily meetings to coordinate work, and defined roles, such as the product owner who prioritizes the work backlog and the scrum master who facilitates the process, structure how decisions get made. Formalized by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland in the mid-1990s, drawing on ideas from a 1986 paper on flexible product development, scrum became one of the most widely used frameworks within the agile software development movement.

FAQs
Is Scrum only used for software development?
No. Scrum began in software but is now used across many domains with complex work.
No. Scrum has its roots in software product development, but the Scrum Guide says it is now being adopted in many domains that hold essentially complex work. The guide notes that developers, researchers, analysts, scientists and other specialists do the work in Scrum, and that it uses the word developers to simplify rather than to exclude anyone.
