Capability Maturity Model Integration is a process level improvement training and appraisal program used to guide organizations in improving their processes across projects, divisions or an entire organization. It was created at Carnegie Mellon University by a group drawn from industry, government and the Software Engineering Institute, sponsored chiefly by the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the National Defense Industrial Association, evolving out of the earlier Capability Maturity Model developed between 1987 and 1997. CMMI defines five progressive maturity levels for an organization processes, from Initial, where processes are unpredictable, through Managed, Defined and Quantitatively Managed, up to Optimizing, where improvement is continuous. It is used especially in United States government contracting, particularly for software development work, and the most recent version, CMMI 3.0, was published in 2023 and is administered by the CMMI Institute, now part of ISACA. Facts
Core PrincipleCMMI structures process improvement around five progressive maturity levels for an organization's processes, from Initial through Managed, Defined and Quantitatively Managed, up to Optimizing. 1 FAQs
Can an organization be certified in CMMI?
No. Organizations are appraised and given a maturity or capability level instead.
No. Organizations cannot be certified in CMMI. Instead they undergo a CMMI appraisal that evaluates how well the practices defined by the model have been implemented and institutionalized. Depending on the scope of the appraisal, an organization may receive a maturity level from 1 to 5 for a defined organizational unit, or a capability level for individual practice areas. Since version 2.0, appraisals use the CMMI Appraisal Method, which replaced the earlier SCAMPI method. Its formal Benchmark Appraisal determines an official maturity or capability level, while a Sustainment Appraisal confirms that practices still satisfy the requirements between benchmarks.
